The question should actually be when to go where when you are on a holiday in Mauritius. It is commonly known that West is Best in Mauritius. There are a couple of reasons for that, but west is not necessarily always the best. It depends on when you are going and what you are looking to get out of your holiday.

The North Coast of Mauritius

The north of Mauritius is full of bustling energy. The popular resort town of Grand Baie is situated here and this is also where you will find lots of interesting shops and restaurants. There are plenty hotels located around Grand Baie. If you want to be part of the hustle and bustle, make sure you choose a hotel in this vicinity.

The West Coast of Mauritius

The West coast of Mauritius has unbeatable beaches. Ranging from the soft sandy bays in Trou aux Biches to the mountainous backdrops of Black River and Tamarin. Not to mention the dramatic beauty of Le Morne Brabant. The wind is mostly more quiet on this side, especially during the windier months of July and August.

The South Coast of Mauritius

The south coast is such a scenic part of Mauritius, not that developed and perhaps the most interesting for those who prefer a balance of beach life and other interesting activities. There are lots of  indigenous vegetation in the South Coast, including the islet of Ile aux Aigrettes and places you can go to hiking or walking. The south coast faces winds all year around and this area in Mauritius comes into its own in the summer season. It might be a little too windy for a holiday on the beach in the winter months of May to August.

The East Coast of Mauritius

The East coast offers exclusivity, with some of the finest hotels on the island, and feels blissfully untouched by mass tourism. The mix of the softest powder-white sand, an emerald lagoon and lush green vegetation place Belle Mare firmly amongst the prettiest beaches in Mauritius, and although the sea can get rough at times you can always take a refreshing dip in the lagoon. The East coast catches the wind, so in summer you will have a welcoming sea breeze but in winter it can be a bit windy and unpleasant.
